What makes a great Sterile Processing Technician? 3 Must Have Personality Traits

Sterile Processing Technicians play a critical role in surgical outcomes. They sterilize surgical instruments and medical devices and prepare the supplies needed for each surgery. Without them, surgery would shut down. Clearly, it’s important for Sterile Processing techs to be good at what they do. Let’s consider a few key personality traits that sterile techs should possess.

Detail Oriented “I Like The Micro”

The importance of this role cannot be overstated. The safety of patients and staff is, literally, in their hands; that’s why they must pay careful attention to every detail during the sterilization process. SPD and OR Technicians also take inventory to ensure instruments are accounted for, order supplies, assemble instrument trays, distribute supplies, and check expiration dates of sterile supplies.

The job also necessitates detailed documentation and inspection of material … the whole process is thoroughly cataloged. In this role, attention to detail is not just a buzzword or a catchphrase; it’s an absolute necessity for anyone who aspires to a career in this field.

InquisitiveNot Afraid to Ask”

New medical device technology is introduced almost daily. Sterile techs are responsible for cleaning and processing a wide variety of equipment. Some pieces of equipment may be less familiar than others; that’s why it’s important for Sterile Processing Technicians to be inquisitive. The job requires vigilant reading and following of OEM instructions to ensure patients and staff are kept safe and protected against infection.

Those that want to “get done fast” will cause errors. Those that understand there will be a patient on the receiving end of the instrument or device being sterilized, are the SPD and OR Techs you do everything to keep.

Good Temperament “Keep It Cool”

Most errors with surgical instruments that occur during surgery originated in the Sterile Processing Department. Therefore, the complaints from Surgeons, Nurses, and Surgical Directors, etc. can be numerous and difficult to deal with. It is common for staff in SPD and OR to finger point.

A person with a good temperament will less likely get sucked into situations that can distract from the key job: STERILIZING SURGICAL INSTRUMENTS AND DEVICES.
